About Space Mermaid
Dax, also known as Space Mermaid, has been interested in costumes their entire life, a great lover of Halloween, and grew up with their mom even creating costumes for them, including Ariel, Jessie the Cowgirl, and Mulan. In fact, upon being asked by their mom when they got so interested in creating cosplays, their response was to point out that it all started with the costumes created for Halloween.
Dax considers their first cosplay to be a Rainbow Dash costume they created for Halloween their senior year of high school. With a cheap rainbow wig, craft foam ears, and cardboard wings, their first cosplay was born!
During college, Dax also developed a deep love for the renaissance festival and especially for putting together outfits for it. They also went to their first conventions during college, and learned how exciting it was to put together cosplays and meet other cosplayers. After college, they decided to learn how to sew their own cosplays, just like their mom did for them as a kid. Ever one to go for trial by fire, their first sewing project was a corseted dress to be Eliza Schuyler from Hamilton. From there, the desire to cosplay and share what they've done was born!
After putting together cosplays from made and modified garments for a few years, they took a step back into creating their own cosplays to create Purah from Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. They were so excited to share the progress they had made in sewing and creating that they decided to compete in their first craftsmanship contest at Magfest 2024, and while they did not win any awards that time, they did receive their first award only a few months later, taking home a Judge's Award at Colossalcon Prime 2024, again for their Purah cosplay.
At GalaxyCon Columbus 2024, Dax took home their first major award - Best Novice for Purah.
At Sekaicon's inaugural contest in 2025, Dax took home runner up for the Advanced division.
Dax currently competes at the journeyman level for craftsmanship, and is extremely excited to be refining their existing skills for future competitions!
